Z is a classic DOS real-time strategy game that focuses on territorial expansion instead of resource management. Its fast-paced and intense, and the CPU doesnt show much mercy.
You start each battle with a group of robot soldiers and a base. Your goal is to get your robots across the map and capture your opponents base. Along the way, you must capture territory flags and make use of the facilities on those territories.
The factories you capture will constantly churn out new robots and vehicles, and manufacturing time is reduced with each territory under your control.
The game has a wide variety of units, and learning their strengths and weaknesses is necessary for success. Sending a pair of snipers up against a tank might not sound wise, but in Z its a surprisingly effective strategy.
Z is fast fun, and most battles dont last more than ten minutes. The only trouble with the iOS version is that its crippled by poor visibility on the iPhone. The viewpoint is zoomed in very close, like the VGA graphics mode in the original DOS version, and it makes battlefield awareness difficult. You have to scroll a lot to keep an eye on everything. The iPad version offers the fully detailed, high-res look of the SVGA mode, and its much easier to play.
This is the complete Z package, with cutscenes, situational music, and all the details from the original, so its worth getting if you loved the original. Newcomers should probably only jump in if they have an iPad.
